With weigh-ins set for later today, preparations have already been made, countless practices completed, there is only one thing left to do: battle hard.

From Friday, March 28th to Sunday, March 30th, 2025, more than 40 Beat the Streets (BTS) athletes representing five BTS cities including New York City, D.C., Baltimore and Providence, and Boston will compete at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach at the esteemed 36th Annual High School Nationals tournament hosted by the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) and presented by ASICS.

BTS student-athletes representing five cities fought hard last year for their chance at a National Championship. A new group of returners and newcomers are looking to battle for the title this year.

The 2025 NHSCA High School Nationals tournament welcomes nearly 6,000 wrestlers for an elite tournament in each grade category. Leading the charge for the BTS group this year is returning NHSCA National Champion and Senior Oumar Tounkara who is looking to repeat this year after earning a gold medal in last year’s junior grade category. Senior Isabella Lorenzana from BTS NYC will be looking to become a national champion as well, after being an All-American last year and placing 7th place in her division. Isael Perez from BTS New England is coming back to the tournament after missing last year’s competition following an All-American finish in 2023. In total, BTS has 11 returning student-athletes and about 30 tournament newcomers, all with a goals to get on the podium and improve their wrestling against the best in the country.

Since 2017, the NHSCA has partnered with Beat the Streets National to support the wrestling journeys of BTS student-athletes by providing excelling BTS wrestlers and coaches scholarshipped opportunities to test themselves, compete, and hone their skills against high-level competition from across the country.

NHSCA CEO Bobby Ferraro had the following to say about the BTS and NHSCA partnership, “The National High School Coaches Association is proud to provide opportunity for Beat the Street participants to compete against the country’s best at the High School Nationals. Our organization admires the mission and efforts of the cities and of those coaches impacting the lives of student-athletes. We are honored to play a small part in providing a positive experience for the Beat the Streets participants.”

Last year more than 42 high school and middle school boys and girls, along with 17 coaches, representing 6 BTS cities including Baltimore, Lancaster, Boston, Providence, New York, DC, and Cleveland were provided the opportunity to compete and bond with fellow athletes in the 2024 NHSCA High School Nationals tournament. Among those 40+ BTS athletes, five earned All-American status at the tournament including BTS New York student-athletes Oumar Tounkara, Evin Gursoy, Isabella Lorenzana, and BTS Baltimore student-athletes Ugochi Anunobi and Rasheed ‘RJ” Duncan.

Beat the Streets cultivates youth development in underserved communities by encouraging a desire for excellence, respect, teamwork, leadership, integrity, and perseverance through off-the-matt enrichment programs and the instruction of quality wrestling programs. Regardless of whether BTS athletes make it on the podium or not this weekend, Beat the Streets sees this competition as a valuable learning experience for BTS student-athletes contributing to their on-the-mat and off-the-mat journeys to self-development and growth.
